Warriors achievements honored

Sioux County High School students were recognized for the achievements April 30 at the annual awards banquet.
Senior Baxter Reece was named as the Kim Jamison Outstanding Athlete. Reece put up a career total of 870 passing yards and rushed for 2,245 yards on the gridiron. He also caught 14 balls for 323 yards and had a total of 3,502 all-purpose yards. On defense he had 220 tackles, six interceptions and five fumble recoveries. In four years he scored 318 points for the Warriors.
Reece earned Panhandle All-Conference Honors this year, along with fellow seniors Taylor and Preston Kreman. Reece also picked up Honorable Mention All-State recognition and will play in the Six-Man All-Star Game May 29 at Chadron State College.
Jhett Skavdahl earned the Cori Martinson Scholar Athlete Award, and Thaine Monroe was presented with the Donny Mack Enthusiasm Award.
Sioux County also recognized maintenance employee and bus driver Phillip Skavdahl, who is retiring after 22 years with the district and recognized Dan Valenta’s 30-plus years of coaching track for the school. This will be Valenta’s final season as track coach.
Finally, the Sioux County FFA chapter announced that in addition to the funds raised for the chapter during the annual Labor Auction in March, the community helped the organization raise $13,000 for the Sandhills Rancher Relief Fund. The fund was established to assist ranchers devastated by this spring’s wildfires.
